Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United has reacted to winning the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for September ahead of Mohamed Salah of Liverpool.
Salah, Everton’s Andros Townsend, and Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin were all beaten to the prize by the Portugal captain.
On his second Man United debut, the 36-year-old scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
In a 2-1 win over West Ham, the former Real Madrid great also scored.
However, Ronaldo was unable to prevent Manchester United from losing 1-0 to Aston Villa at the end of September.
Salah, meanwhile, has scored in his last seven matches, equalling the personal record he set during his first season at Liverpool in 2017-18.
He finished that campaign with 44 goals in all competitions, and on recent evidence, he will not be far away from that total this time around.
“He’s one of the greatest players ever to play for Liverpool,” says Carragher. “Liverpool lost Roger Hunt recently, one of the greatest goalscorers ever seen. Mo Salah is right up there, no doubt about that.”
On Tuesday an article was published on the website of one of the UK’s biggest newspapers.
“Mohamed Salah is the world’s best player – so why is he not idolised more?” it asked.
Salah’s name rings out at each and every game, home and away. No player sells more shirts in the club shops. No player is more in demand when it comes to autographs or selfies with supporters.
Over the duration of September, the Liverpool man has been by far the finest player in the league. His recent form has sparked debate over whether he is the top player in the world right now. Ronaldo has three tap-in goals, all of which have come as a result of goalie errors.
Unfortunately, figuring out how and why it happened doesn’t take long. Ronaldo has 300 million more Instagram followers than the Premier League, thus the prize is decided by a popular vote.
Cristiano Ronaldo Performance in September
C. Ronaldo has played 90 minutes in each of the three games, but the Manchester United forward has not provided any assists.
In his first appearance for United after the reunion in September, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace (two goals in one game). In that game, Ronaldo scored two goals against Newcastle before coming back to score an equalizer against West Ham.
While Ronaldo’s performances in Europe aren’t taken into account for the Premier League POTM award, he did score two goals for United in Champions League matches.
Ronaldo has won five awards in total, but this is his first since joining the English club this year. During his last spell with United, from 2003 until 2009, Ronaldo won the award four times.
In a tweet on Friday, Ronaldo expressed his gratitude for the prize, saying he was honored to receive it.
The Manchester United number seven also acknowledged his teammates, saying he couldn’t have won without them.
“Proud to be elected Player Of The Month among so many great players in the Premier League,” Ronaldo tweeted.
“Thanks to all my teammates at Man. United, couldn’t have done it without them. Let’s keep working hard and the results will come!”
